IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday said that India is focused on all key elements of semiconductor ecosystem from design to manufacturing, and the nation is emerging as a trusted partner in global value chains. Vaishnaw, who was addressing Semicon India 2023 in Gandhinagar, said that in today's economy, semiconductors are required in every sector.

Demand for electronics is growing every year, the minister added. Talking about Micron's mega plans for India, Vaishnaw said construction of the unit will start soon.

Another Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who was also present at the event, said AMD's decision to set up its largest R&D design centre in India will play an important role in building a world-class semiconductor design and innovation ecosystem in the country, It will also drive tremendous opportunities for large pool of highly skilled semiconductor engineers and researchers and will position India as a global talent hub, Minister of State for IT and Electronics Rajeev Chandrasekhar tweeted.

"I welcome @AMD's decision to set up its largest R&D #design center in #NewIndia and expansion of the India-AMD partnership. It will certainly play an important role in building a world class #semiconductor design and #innovation ecosystem," Chandrasekhar tweeted.

He went on to add: "It will also provide tremendous opportunities for our large pool of highly skilled semiconductor engineers and researchers and will catalyse PM @narendramodi Ji's vision of India becoming a global talent hub." AMD on Friday announced an investment of $400 million in India over five years, and said the company will be a strong partner in building India's semiconductor ecosystem. The company will open a new research and development campus in Bengaluru, which will be its largest such facility in world.

Meanwhile, Foxconn has said it is optimistic about direction of India's semiconductor road map, and asserted that Taiwan is and will be India's most trusted and reliable partner. "Let's do this together," Young Liu, chairman of Foxconn said addressing SemiconIndia 2023. Building an ecosystem for chips in India is "for very brave", he said adding "Where there is a will, there is a way".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the conference, has anounced that the technology companies will be given 50 per cent financial assistance for setting up semiconductor manufacturing facility in the country.
