RBI Elevates Indranil Bhattacharyya To Executive Director Position

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced on Thursday that it has appointed Indranil Bhattacharyya as its new Executive Director (ED), effective March 19. In his new role, Bhattacharyya will oversee the Department of Economic and Policy Research.

Before his promotion, Bhattacharyya served as an Adviser in the RBI's Monetary Policy Department. He brings a wealth of experience with him, having worked in various capacities within the RBI for nearly 30 years. His expertise spans multiple fields, including monetary policy, fiscal policy, banking, and international economic relations. Bhattacharyya has also contributed to the RBI's work in its International Department and Department of Economic and Policy Research.

Professional Background

In addition to his roles at the RBI, Bhattacharyya's career includes a notable five-year tenure as an economic expert at the technical office of the Governor at Qatar Central Bank in Doha, Qatar, from 2009 to 2014. This experience broadened his global perspective on economic policy and central banking.

Bhattacharyya holds a postgraduate degree in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. His primary research interests include monetary theory and policy, financial markets, market microstructure, and fiscal policy. The RBI highlighted his extensive background in these areas as a valuable asset in his new leadership role.  

Other Appointment This Month

Meanwhile, earlier this month, the RBI had appointed Ajit Ratnakar Joshi as Executive Director (ED) to look after the Department of Statistics and Information Management and Financial Stability Department.

Before his promotion to Executive Director, Joshi served as Principal Adviser in the Department of Statistics and Information Management. With over 30 years of experience, he has expertise in statistics, information technology, and cyber risk management. Additionally, he has been a faculty member at the Institute of Development and Research in Banking Technology in Hyderabad.
