Maruti Suzuki Stumbles, Automaker's Share Drops Below 40 Per Cent In Domestic PV Market. M&M Gains

Maruti Suzuki clocked retail sales of 1,38,021 units, accounting for a 39.44 per cent share in April 2025, down from 1,39,173 units and a 40.39 per cent share clocked in the same month last year.

India’s leading carmaker Maruti Suzuki witnessed a dip in its domestic passenger vehicle (PV) market share in April 2025, slipping below the 40 per cent mark.

As per data released by the Federation of Automotive Dealers Associations (FADA), the company recorded retail sales of 1,38,021 units, accounting for a 39.44 per cent share in the month under review. This marked a slight decline from April 2024, when Maruti Suzuki sold 1,39,173 units, holding a 40.39 per cent share, reported PTI.

For the full fiscal year 2024-25, the company achieved total retail sales of 16,71,559 units, with a market share of 40.25 per cent. In comparison, the previous year saw retail volumes of 16,08,041 units and a slightly higher market share of 40.6 per cent.

Mahindra Moves Up to Second Spot, Hyundai Slips to Fourth

Mahindra & Mahindra emerged as the month’s biggest gainer, propelled by strong demand in the SUV segment. With retail sales hitting 48,405 units in April 2025, the company’s market share rose to 13.83 per cent. This is a significant jump from April 2024, when it sold 38,696 units and held 11.23 per cent, ranking fourth.

Over the fiscal year 2024-25, Mahindra clocked 5,12,626 units in retail sales, translating to a 12.34 per cent market share—up from 10.79 per cent and 4,27,390 units in 2023-24.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL), traditionally ranked second, dropped to the fourth position. The company sold 43,642 units in April 2025, securing a 12.47 per cent market share. A year earlier, it had sold 49,243 units and captured 14.29 per cent of the market. During FY25, Hyundai’s total retail sales stood at 5,59,149 units with a 13.46 per cent share, down from 5,62,865 units and a 14.21 per cent share in FY24.

Tata Motors Retains Third Place

Tata Motors maintained its position as the third-largest PV seller. The automaker sold 44,065 units in April 2025, capturing 12.59 per cent of the market. In April last year, it recorded 46,915 units in retail sales and held a 13.61 per cent share. Over the fiscal year, Tata posted retail sales of 5,35,960 units, accounting for 12.9 per cent of the market. This was marginally lower than FY24, when it sold 5,39,567 units and held a 13.62 per cent share.

According to FADA, total retail sales of passenger vehicles in April 2025 reached 3,49,939 units, a modest rise of 1.55 per cent over the 3,44,594 units recorded in April 2024.
