WhatsApp Username Feature: WhatsApp to Introduce Usernames, Reducing Need to Share Mobile Numbers

WhatsApp is set to introduce a major privacy-focused update that will allow users to connect through unique usernames instead of sharing their mobile numbers. The messaging platform has reportedly begun the process of reserving usernames, with the feature expected to roll out to all users by the end of the year. Once available, users will be identified by their chosen username rather than their phone number, similar to the system used on Instagram and Facebook. The new feature is aimed at improving user privacy by reducing the need to disclose personal contact numbers while chatting with others. According to WhatsApp, usernames will make it easier to communicate securely, especially with people who do not have each other’s phone numbers. Users are advised to keep their WhatsApp application updated to the latest version. When the feature becomes available, they can access it through Settings > Account > Username to create and reserve their preferred username, subject to availability, before the wider rollout is completed.
