Wall Controversy: Objectionable Slogans at Jamia Trigger Fresh Campus Row
A major controversy has erupted at Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University after allegedly objectionable slogans were found written on campus walls. The university administration strongly condemned the incident and said efforts were underway to identify those responsible. Reports indicate that the slogans were subsequently removed, but no official information has emerged about the identities of the people involved. Students participating in the ongoing protest have alleged that the incident is an attempt to malign the university. Meanwhile, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has demanded an impartial investigation and strict action against those responsible. The controversy comes amid a continuing student movement demanding the restoration of student union elections. Protesters have called for an announcement of election dates, withdrawal of disciplinary action against demonstrators, and removal of the security adviser and chief proctor. A university high-level committee has announced that a draft committee has been formed to prepare the student union constitution and promised a review of disciplinary actions taken after October 12. However, students remain dissatisfied, insisting that elections be restored immediately. Five students have reportedly been on an indefinite hunger strike since October 12. Jamia has not held student union elections since 2005, after the elected union was dissolved in March 2006.
