Pahalgam Terror Attack: CCS halts Indus Treaty, cuts Pakistan's diplomatic staff after attack

In the wake of the deadly terror strike in Pahalgam, the Government of India has initiated a series of strong diplomatic and strategic actions against Pakistan. Following a high-level Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting chaired at the Prime Minister's residence on April 23, 2025, several major decisions were taken, signaling a decisive shift in India's Pakistan policy.Among the key measures is the suspension of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty until Pakistan provides credible and irreversible proof of ending support to cross-border terrorism. The Attari check-post has been shut with immediate effect, allowing only a limited timeframe for legally crossed individuals to return. The SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) has been revoked for Pakistani nationals, rendering all previous SVES visas invalid. Those currently in India under this scheme have 48 hours to leave the country.Further escalating the diplomatic pressure, India declared all Pakistani defense advisors in New Delhi's High Commission as persona non grata, giving them one week to exit. It also reduced the Pakistani diplomatic staff limit in India from 55 to 30. In a reciprocal move, India will withdraw its defense advisors from its High Commission in Islamabad and nullify those positions.
