NAVAL POWER RISE: PM Modi Commissions Three Indigenous Warships, Boosting India’s Maritime Edge

India marked a major milestone in strengthening its maritime capabilities as Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the commissioning ceremony of three indigenous frontline naval vessels in Kolkata on International Yoga Day. The event highlighted the nation’s growing self-reliance in defense manufacturing and its commitment to enhancing maritime security in strategically important waters.

The three vessels commissioned into the Indian Navy are INS Agray, designed for anti-submarine warfare operations, INS Dunagiri, an advanced stealth frigate built for maritime combat missions, and INS Sanshodhak, a state-of-the-art hydrographic survey ship equipped with modern mapping and monitoring technologies. Developed through indigenous expertise and constructed by Indian shipbuilding capabilities, the warships represent a significant achievement under the vision of a self-reliant defense ecosystem. Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that maritime strength is essential for any nation aspiring to become a major global power. He noted that global trade, digital connectivity, strategic resources, and future energy opportunities are increasingly linked to the oceans, making naval preparedness a critical national priority. The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s progress in defense manufacturing and naval modernization, stating that the induction of advanced warships reflects the country’s engineering excellence, technological innovation, and strategic ambition. The ceremony coincided with World Hydrography Day, adding special significance to the commissioning of INS Sanshodhak, India’s most advanced hydrographic survey vessel. The induction of these platforms is expected to significantly enhance surveillance, underwater warfare capabilities, maritime domain awareness, and operational readiness. The move further strengthens India’s position in the Indian Ocean region while showcasing the growing capabilities of the domestic defense industry in building world-class naval assets.
