Kavadis’ Anger Sparks Violence On Pilgrimage Route, Authorities Struggle To Control Chaos

Since the start of the Sawan month on July 11, violent incidents involving Kavadis have repeatedly surfaced along the pilgrimage routes from Uttarakhand to Uttar Pradesh. Reports reveal aggressive behavior, clashes, and unruly conduct by some Kavadis, which have marred the spirit of the holy journey. Pilgrims are seen arguing fiercely over carrying heavy offerings, blocking vehicles, and even engaging in physical fights. Shocking scenes include Kavadis assaulting fellow pilgrims, damaging public property like school buses, and harassing women. Citizens and local commuters express fear and frustration over the unrest.Despite the spiritual significance of the Kavad Yatra, these violent episodes raise serious questions about law enforcement’s role. In some cases, police appear passive or overwhelmed as clashes erupt, especially near the Uttarakhand border where auto-rickshaw drivers were beaten and vehicles vandalized. The police have initiated “Operation Kalanemi” to locate and curb troublemakers, but the ongoing chaos reveals gaps in control measures. Authorities emphasize that religious faith must not justify violence or disruption of public order. The pilgrimage’s sanctity is at stake due to the actions of a few unruly individuals who are turning a sacred journey into a law-and-order challenge. Officials urge calm and cooperation to preserve peace and spirituality during the rest of the season.
