Dhankhar's Statement on Indian Judiciary, 'Emergency Wouldn't Have Happened if Judiciary Hadn't Yielded

At the 75th anniversary celebration of the Rajasthan High Court in Jodhpur, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar addressed the role of the judiciary in India, recalling the dark period of the Emergency. He described the Emergency as the darkest phase since independence, asserting that the judiciary had bowed to authoritarianism, leading to the imprisonment of many individuals. Dhankhar criticized the judiciary for succumbing to the "shameless dictatorship" of the time, suggesting that the struggle for freedom had become entangled in personal restrictions. He posited that if the Supreme Court had not yielded, the Emergency might not have occurred, and the country would have made significant progress much earlier. During his speech at the "Amazing India" event, Dhankhar highlighted that the judiciary, by bending under pressure, had resulted in numerous individuals being imprisoned and subjected to humiliation. Many of those who suffered during that period are now prominent figures in government, such as Prime Ministers, Ministers, and Governors, contributing to the nation's advancement. However, Dhankhar emphasized that it is important not to forget that tumultuous era.
