UP Govt Cracks Down On 14 X Handles Spreading Misinformation, Rumours About Maha Kumbh Mela, Case Filed

Officials discovered that certain X accounts had circulated an old video from Dhanbad, Jharkhand, falsely associating it with the Prayagraj Mahakumbh.

The Yogi government has identified and cracked down on 14 X (formerly known as Twitter) accounts in an effort to curb misinformation and rumours about Mahakumbh 2025 on social media.

After the directives of Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Prashant Kumar, authorities are actively monitoring social media platforms to prevent the spread of misinformation, with legal action being taken against violators.

During surveillance, officials discovered that certain X accounts had circulated an old video from Dhanbad, Jharkhand, falsely associating it with the Prayagraj Mahakumbh. The misleading posts alleged that "the Yogi government’s police is brutally assaulting devotees searching for their missing relatives in Mahakumbh."

However, fact-checking confirmed that the video originated from Dhanbad, Jharkhand, where a lathi charge was conducted by local police on January 1, 2025. The Kumbh Mela Police also debunked the claims through its official account.

Authorities have categorised this as a deliberate attempt to defame the state government and police while inciting public unrest. As a result, 14 X accounts have been identified, an FIR has been registered at Kotwali Kumbh Mela, and legal action has been initiated.
