SearchGPT: OpenAI Enters Google Territory With Its Latest AI Search Platform

SearchGPT is still in its prototype phase, there is no word on when a public launch will take place.

OpenAI has entered the competitive search engine market with the introduction of SearchGPT, an artificial intelligence-driven search platform that provides real-time internet information access. This strategic move positions OpenAI against established giants such as Google and Microsoft, as well as emerging AI search services.

Announced on Thursday, SearchGPT is currently in its prototype phase and is being tested by a select group of users and publishers. OpenAI intends to eventually integrate the most successful features of this search tool into its popular ChatGPT.

Google currently holds a 91.1 per cent share of the search engine market, according to Statcounter, as reported by Reuters.

How Will SearchGPT Work?

SearchGPT will offer users summarised search results with source links and the ability to ask follow-up questions for more contextual responses. This feature aims to enhance user interaction and engagement with search content.

Additionally, OpenAI plans to provide publishers with tools to manage how their content appears in SearchGPT results. Notable publishing partners include News Corp and The Atlantic, highlighting a growing collaboration between OpenAI and major content providers.

In Line With News Publications

This development follows content licensing agreements OpenAI has made with major organisations such as the Associated Press, News Corp, and Axel Springer. Despite the potential benefits, newer AI-powered search services like Perplexity are already facing legal challenges from publishers such as Wired, Forbes, and Condé Nast, according to Crane.

Since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, major search engines have been integrating AI into their platforms. Microsoft, leveraging its early investment in OpenAI, has adopted this technology for its Bing search engine. Meanwhile, Google introduced AI-powered summaries to the public at its developer conference in May.

Google has not yet commented on the potential impact of SearchGPT on its business, according to Reuters.
