Russia-Ukraine Crisis: Meta Expands Ban On Russian State Media Outlets Globally

Meta (formerly Facebook) has expanded its ban on Russian state media outlets such as RT News and Russian news agency Sputnik globally.

New Delhi: Meta (formerly Facebook) has expanded its ban on Russian state media outlets such as RT News and Russian news agency Sputnik globally. Meta has imposed a ban on its platforms Facebook and Instagram globally to stop the flow of misinformation amid the deepening Russia-Ukraine crisis. Meta has announced to demote content from Facebook Pages and Instagram accounts from Russian state-controlled media outlets and make them harder to find across our platforms globally.

“We have also begun to demote posts that contain links to Russian state-controlled media websites on Facebook," Meta said in a statement.

“We will label these links and provide more information to people before they share or click on them to let them know that they lead to Russian state-controlled media websites. We plan on putting similar measures in place on Instagram," the company added.

After banning Russian accounts from running ads and monetising on the platform, Facebook parent Meta yesterday announced rolling out encrypted Instagram DMs in Ukraine and Russia amid the ongoing crisis. The social networking giant is attempting to clamp down on Russian propaganda globally amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict by demoting all Russian state media across its platforms.

The social networking giant had earlier mentioned that it was reviewing requests from other governments to bar access to Russian state-controlled accounts in their countries. According to Meta's head of global affairs Nick Clegg, the company has banned Russian state media from running ads or monetising on the platform anywhere in the world.

Meta's head of global affairs Nick Clegg had last week said that the company had imposed a ban on Russian state media from running ads or monetising on the platform anywhere in the world.
