The think tank Green Alliance presented its perspective on the primary challenges encountered by the UK government in transitioning away from petrol and diesel cars by 2035, citing an article penned by the actor as detrimental to the cause. According to a report by Sky News, Atkinson was mentioned singled out, who had made the statement in June 2023.

The renowned actor's article was headlined: "I love electric vehicles - and was an early adopter. But increasingly I feel duped."
