Google To Promote Lesser Employees To Senior Roles In 2023: Here's Why

Google is looking to ensure that the number of employees in leadership positions grows in proportion to the company's growth.

Google has informed its employees via email that fewer promotions to senior positions will be made this year than in previous years. The email stated that the promotion process will be manager-led and similar to last year, but due to the company's slower pace of hiring, there will be fewer promotions into L6 and above. The L6 designation refers to the first layer of seniority in the workforce, consisting of individuals with approximately ten years of experience.

Google said that it will be promoting fewer people to senior roles to ensure that the number of employees in leadership positions grows in proportion to the company's growth.

If managers believe that an employee is ready to be promoted, they will nominate them. Technical employees who wish to self-nominate will have a short window of time between March 6 and March 8 to do so.

The change is in line with the implementation of a new performance review system called Google Reviews and Development (GRAD), which will result in more employees receiving low-performance ratings and fewer receiving high marks. In a letter to employees on January 20, Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed that over 6 per cent of the total workforce, or about 12,000 people, would be laid off globally.

Meanwhile, large-scale layoffs in the tech sector have continued through 2023, with news of hundreds of people losing their jobs making it to headlines every week. Amidst all these, several employees have taken to social media to express their grief and share stories about their plight.

Google has reportedly sacked around 450 employees across various departments in India. One such employee from Google India, who was recently laid off, penned down an emotional note in his first post on LinkedIn.

Harsh Vijayvargiya, who belongs to Hyderabad, and worked as Digital media senior associate at Google, shared his ordeal on the site. He said his heart skipped a bit on receiving a pop-up email notification from Google Operations Center.

Vijayvargiya claimed that the news of his sacking came after him being named as the "star performer" of the month. In his post, he shared that the whole incident has left him asking "Why me?"

Claiming himself to be a proud "Googler", he said, "Why me though I was star performer for month still why me? And I see there was no answer at all!"
