Google Kills Search Labs' 'Notes' Feature Launched In September Last Year
According to Google, the initiative aimed to foster knowledge-sharing directly on Search by catering to users’ preference for authentic peer input.
Google in November 2023 introduced a new experiment 'Notes' into its Search Labs with the aim to create a personalised search feature for user-generated insights and encourage discussions. With the arrival of this feature, the tech giant permitted users to attach public or private notes to search results. Notably, this feature was akin to what the Reddit forum, X Community Notes were offering. Now, as per 9to5Google, this feature is going to be terminated before it can even launch publically.
As per reports, this feature will be available till the end of July. With this new feature, users were able to leave helpful tips about an article in Search results or Discover.
As per the report by 9to5Googe, the giant said, “We’re excited to continue testing new ways to connect people to authentic, relatable voices and look forward to bringing some of our learnings from Notes into future product experiences.”
Google Remains Committed To Explore New Ways To Enhance User Experience
Upon enrolling in the experimental feature, users encountered options like “Add note” and “Notes” within the Google app interface. These tools facilitated the addition of annotations, images, and more to links in search results. The “Notes” button allowed access to shared insights from other users.
Users interacted with a grid of stories where they could like, share, and save content for future reference. Google employed algorithmic projections and human oversight to maintain quality. According to Google, the initiative aimed to foster knowledge-sharing directly on Search by catering to users’ preference for authentic peer input.
Notes was initially slated to end in December 2023, however, now after a comparatively long run, it is finally coming to an end.
