Nowruz, meaning "new day" in Persian, marks the start of spring and a fresh beginning for millions worldwide.

Nowruz: Google is celebrating Nowruz 2025, the Persian New Year, with a colorful and festive doodle, honoring a tradition that has been observed for over 3,000 years. The occasion symbolizes renewal, hope, and the triumph of light over darkness, bringing together communities across Central Asia, the Middle East, the Caucasus, South Asia, and beyond.
A Celebration of New Beginnings
Nowruz, meaning "new day" in Persian, marks the start of spring and a fresh beginning for millions worldwide. With roots in ancient Persia, the festival is deeply intertwined with Zoroastrian traditions and has continued to be a major cultural event for diverse communities. Families gather to celebrate, share meals, and engage in rituals that emphasize unity and renewal.
In recognition of its cultural significance, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) added Nowruz to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. Additionally, March 21 is officially recognized as International Nowruz Day by the United Nations.
The Symbolic Haft-Sin Table
One of the most cherished traditions of Nowruz is the haft-sin table, which features seven symbolic items, each beginning with the Persian letter “sin.” These include:
- Sabzeh (sprouted wheatgrass) – representing rebirth and growth
- Samanu (wheat pudding) – symbolizing strength and prosperity
- Senjed (dried olives) – associated with love and wisdom
- Somāq (sumac berries) – representing the sunrise and the victory of good over evil
- Serkeh (vinegar) – signifying patience and wisdom
- Sib (apples) – symbolizing beauty and health
- Sir (garlic) – associated with protection and well-being
Apart from this, many people take part in customs such as house cleaning (symbolizing a fresh start), painting eggs, and jumping over bonfires in a ritual known as Chaharshanbe Suri — believed to cleanse negative energy and bring strength for the coming year.
