Honor Is Making A Smartphone With Sliding Display? Patent Spotted On CNIPA Reveals

The patent outlines a support structure designed to facilitate sliding motions, which is as crucial for this design as a hinge is for foldable phones.

The competition between smartphone manufacturers is increasing with each day that passes, and every manufacturer is trying their level best to emerge as the market leader. To stay relevant in the market, smartphone manufacturers are exploring innovative form factors to push the boundaries of future designs. For example, Chinese brand Honor has been observed developing a sliding display technology aimed at expanding screen space to improve multitasking and other uses.

A recently discovered patent on CNIPA offers insights into how this technology might function and its potential impact.

Honor Sliding Display Patent: What Do We Know

This Honor patent (number CN 118582642 A) has been approved by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), with the discovery first reported by Chinese outlet IT Home. The patent outlines a support structure designed to facilitate sliding motions, which is as crucial for this design as a hinge is for foldable phones.

The concept features two screen segments—one stationary and the other sliding—connected by elastic beams that reduce stress on the display. The sliding action is powered by a linear motor and a scissor-like mechanism, along with additional support units and connecting elements that ensure smooth retraction and expansion.

As long as the support system is free of gaps, this design could function effectively. But what purpose does this technology serve? Let’s dive into that now.

Honor Sliding Display: What Benefits Will It Bring?

A sliding display offers enhanced multitasking by providing more screen space, allowing users to run multiple apps side-by-side with ease. This larger canvas improves the clarity of tasks that may have been difficult to perform on a smaller screen, such as photo editing, content creation, digital drawing, and working with documents.

The expanded screen also enhances the experience for consuming media and playing games, offering a more comfortable and immersive display.

For office tasks like video conferencing, spreadsheets, and presentations, a larger screen makes these activities more efficient. Despite the added screen size, the device maintains portability, as the extended display can be retracted, allowing for easy carrying.
