Apple Maker Foxconn To Resume Operations After Being Shut For Almost A Month: Report

After being shut for almost a month, contract manufacturer Foxconn's plant in Sriperumbudur is set to reopen on Wednesday.

New Delhi: After being shut for almost a month, contract manufacturer Foxconn's plant in Sriperumbudur, is set to reopen on Wednesday (January 12), the media has reported. The Foxconn facility was put on probation by Apple and it had said that some of the remote dormitory accommodations and dining rooms being used for employees at the Foxconn unit did not meet required standards.

According to Apple, the Foxconn India facility would continue to remain on probation and that it would also monitor conditions at workers' dormitories and dining halls, along with independent auditors, said a report published in Reuters.

The report added that the facility would restart production with not more than 100 people and could take more than two months to resume full production. Apple is yet to come out with a statement. ABP Live has reached the company for a comment.

There was a ruckus after more than 150 employees working at iPhone supplier Foxconn's unit had fallen sick and were hospitalised while and 256 others were treated as out-patients for food poisoning.

Apple took action and put the Foxconn unit on probation. "We hold our suppliers accountable to the highest standards in the industry and regularly conduct assessments to ensure compliance. Following recent concerns about food safety and accommodation conditions at Foxconn Sriperumbudur, we dispatched independent auditors to undertake additional detailed assessments," an Apple spokesperson had earlier told ABP Live in a statement.

Echoing similar sentiments, a Foxconn spokesperson had also said: “The safety and well-being of our employees is our top priority. We have been investigating recent issues at our Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu and have found that some offsite dormitory facilities do not meet the required standards. We are very sorry for the issue our employees experienced and are taking immediate steps to enhance the facilities and services we provide at the remote dormitory accommodations."

Foxconn was also restructuring its local management team and its management systems to ensure it can achieve and maintain the standards that are needed.
