Watch: Ashwini Vaishnaw Gives Demo Of Precision Semiconductor Tech That Micron Technology Is Bringing To India

US-based chip maker Micron Technology said it will invest up to $825 million in its first semiconductor assembly and test facility in the Indian state of Gujarat.

Union Minister for Communications, Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday gave a demonstration of complex, precision semiconductor technology that global semiconductor systems maker Micron Technology is bringing to India, according to news agency ANI. This comes soon after US-based chip maker Micron Technology said it will invest up to $825 million in its first semiconductor assembly and test facility in the Indian state of Gujarat. Micron Technology’s facility has been approved under the Centre's “Modified Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) Scheme”.

“The first semiconductor unit of India will be set up by Micron Technologies... We’re hopeful that within the next six quarters, we should have the first made-in-India semiconductor chip rolling out of this factory," Vaishnaw was quoted as saying last week in an interview.

It should be noted that Micron's plant which would come up at Sanand Industrial Park in Gujarat, will essentially focus on packaging chips instead of manufacturing them. The company would transform wafers into ball grid array integrated circuit packages, memory modules and solid-state drives, said a report by Indian Express.

Under the government's "Modified Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) Scheme", Micron will receive 50 per cent fiscal support for the total project cost from the Centre and incentives representing 20 per cent of the total project cost from Gujarat.

Micron's new facility will enable assembly and test manufacturing for both DRAM and NAND products and address demand from domestic and international markets, the company earlier said in a statement. The prime minister had invited Micron Technology to boost semiconductor manufacturing in India and noted that the country can provide competitive advantages in various parts of the semiconductor supply chain.
