Facebook-Parent Meta To Combat Disinformation, GenAI Risks With New Team

The surge in generative AI technology, capable of rapidly producing text, images, and videos based on prompts, has raised alarms over its potential exploitation to disrupt crucial processes.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has announced plans to establish a dedicated team to combat disinformation and address concerns surrounding the misuse of generative artificial intelligence ahead of the upcoming European Parliament elections slated for June. The move comes amidst growing apprehensions regarding election interference and the proliferation of misleading AI-generated content.

The surge in generative AI technology, capable of rapidly producing text, images, and videos based on prompts, has raised alarms over its potential exploitation to disrupt crucial electoral processes worldwide, including the forthcoming European Parliament elections scheduled from June 6 to June 9. With 720 lawmakers shaping EU policies and laws in collaboration with member state governments, safeguarding the integrity of these elections is paramount.

Marco Pancini, Meta's Head of EU Affairs, outlined the company's proactive approach in a recent blog post, highlighting the establishment of an Elections Operations Center to promptly identify and address potential threats as they emerge. The centre will draw expertise from various divisions within Meta, including intelligence, data science, engineering, research, operations, content policy, and legal teams, with a specific focus on combating misinformation, countering influence operations, and mitigating risks associated with the misuse of generative AI.

Furthermore, Meta's efforts extend beyond internal measures, as Pancini revealed plans to expand partnerships with independent fact-checking organisations across the European Union, adding three new partners in Bulgaria, France, and Slovakia to bolster efforts in combating misinformation.

In collaboration with Microsoft, OpenAI, and 17 other tech firms, Meta recently committed to collaborative initiatives aimed at preventing deceptive artificial intelligence content from undermining elections worldwide.

In other Meta-related developments, reports have surfaced regarding the company's experimentation with a new feature enabling users to share content simultaneously on both Facebook and Threads, reminiscent of Instagram's existing cross-posting functionality. According to TechCrunch, Meta is currently testing the capability to share content from Facebook to Threads, albeit exclusively on iOS devices for the time being. There's speculation surrounding the potential expansion of this feature to Android users, although no official confirmation has been provided.

Feedback from Threads users, such as @whimchic, suggests that posts are automatically shared across linked Instagram and Facebook accounts, although the process lacks explicit notification. While this feature could streamline content sharing for creators, it poses challenges for users seeking to maintain distinct social media personas. Nonetheless, Meta anticipates increased engagement on Threads and heightened content circulation across the platform as a result of this integration.
