Facebook Continues Major Crackdown On Hate Content, Removes 3.15 Million Posts

Removal of posts content that spreads hatred, contempt, and dislike on Facebook - Instagram has risen by 15 times.

New Delhi: In the June 2021 quarter, Facebook took action against 3.15 million posts that looked to spread hate. Globally, such content has decreased on the social media platform.

On every 10,000 posts, the number of posts that spread hate and malice has come down to five, the company revealed in a report.

"We removed 31.5 million hate content this quarter, compared to 25.2 million in the first quarter (March 2021)," said Guy Rosen, Vice-President (Integrity), Facebook.

Whereas more than 9.8 million posts were removed from Instagram as compared to 6.3 million in the first quarter. The third consecutive quarter has seen a drop in the prevalence of hateful content on Facebook, it was informed.

He said that ever since the social media platform started reporting such content, there has been a 15-fold increase in the removal of content that spreads hatred, dislike and malice on Facebook and Instagram.

Rosen said that in the second quarter, the presence of abusive language was 0.05 percent i.e. five per 10,000 content had such language. It was 0.05-0.06 percent in the first quarter of the year i.e. five to six per 10,000 posts.

The figures are a part of Facebook's Community Standards Enforcement Report for the second quarter of 2021.

Rosen explained that this drop was due to the company's active participation in efforts for improvement in identifying such materials.

"Our investment in AI (artificial intelligence) enables us to detect more violations associated with hate language on Facebook and Instagram," he said. This technology helps us implement our policies for billions of users and in many languages," it said.
