DeepSeek To Be Hosted On Indian Servers, Ashwini Vaishnaw Confirms. Here's How It Will Be Possible

India is making significant investments in its AI ecosystem through the India AI Compute Facility, which has acquired 18,693 GPUs to support the development of large-scale AI models.

Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) platform DeepSeek will be hosted on servers located in India, according to Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Speaking at the Utkarsh Odisha Conclave on January 30, Vaishnaw said this move aims to address concerns over data privacy and cross-border information transfer, reported Moneycontrol.

"It is an open-source model. Like LLama, which is open source, this too can be hosted on Indian servers. Data privacy issues regarding DeepSeek can be addressed by hosting open-source models on Indian servers," Vaishnaw remarked during the event.

He emphasised the significance of model optimisation, stating that AI initiatives should remain open and application-focused for broader technological development.

Hosted Via India AI

India is making significant investments in its AI ecosystem through the India AI Compute Facility, which has acquired 18,693 GPUs to support the development of large-scale AI models tailored to Indian requirements.

Of these, 15,000 are high-end GPUs, including 1,480 H200 units. Vaishnaw highlighted that approximately 10,000 GPUs are now operational and accessible to researchers, startups, and businesses.

"This is coming at significantly less than 1 dollar, with the cost being borne by the Government. We will be able to provide subsidy for four years. The real value of AI models will come with algorithmic efficiency, secondly, quality of datasets," Vaishnaw added, noting that the initiative provides one of the most cost-effective compute solutions available globally.

Indigenous AI Development On The Horizon

The Government is in discussions with global technology partners to enhance the country's GPU capabilities. Efforts are underway to foster the indigenous development of chips and GPUs. "Major chip designers are willing to work with India to develop indigenous GPUs. We will share more information soon on indigenous development of GPUs. The design ecosystem is developing nicely in India for new chip creation and IP. We are working on a partnership on co-developing GPUs with MeitY," Vaishnaw revealed.

He assured that further details on these partnerships and GPU co-development plans would be shared soon.

Data Sovereignty & Security

India has long maintained a cautious approach toward cross-border data transfers, particularly concerning China. Hosting platforms like DeepSeek on Indian servers aligns with the country’s emphasis on data localisation and security.

Vaishnaw also pointed out that major tech firms such as Jio Platforms, CtrlS Datacenters, Locuz Enterprise Solutions, and NxtGen Data Center are contributing to GPU supplies for the AI mission.

The minister concluded by underscoring the transformative role of AI in India, stressing the need for high-quality datasets and algorithmic efficiency to unlock the full potential of AI technologies.
