Apple Teases (A Few) AI Integration Features At 'Let Loose' iPad Launch Event

Despite the absence of groundbreaking AI breakthroughs, Apple's emphasis on enhancing the user experience through AI advancements resonated throughout the event.

Apple is the last major tech giant to join the artificial intelligence (AI) bandwagon, with Samsung and Google having already rolled out their AI services across their devices. However, fans of the Cupertino tech giant have been waiting with bated breath to get a glimpse of Apple's own AI features, which are expected to roll out with iOS 18 (which will be announced next month at the World Wide Developers Conference). Now, Apple did drop some hints of AI integration across its device lineup during its recent 'Let Loose' iPad launch event.

While keeping the broader AI unveil under wraps until WWDC, Apple showcased the prowess of its AI-powered features and the upgraded M4 chip.

Apple's AI Tease

During the event, Apple spotlighted the latest iteration of the iPad Air, emphasising its augmented AI capabilities driven by the new M2 chip. Among its touted features were visual lookup, subject lift, and live text capture, showcasing the device as a powerhouse for AI-driven tasks. The company also acknowledged the contribution of third-party developers, such as Pixelmator's Photomator, in leveraging AI models to enhance photo editing.

The unveiling of the iPad Pro's transition to the M4 chip marked a significant leap in performance, with Apple boasting up to 50 per cent faster processing than its predecessor, the M2. The inclusion of next-generation ML accelerators and the neural engine underscored Apple's dedication to accelerating AI workloads, positioning the iPad Pro as a frontrunner in AI-driven computing.

While specific consumer applications of these hardware advancements remain undisclosed, Apple hinted at forthcoming AI features within the iPadOS ecosystem, empowering developers to harness CoreML frameworks for on-device AI capabilities.

Noteworthy AI-powered enhancements were showcased in applications like Logic Pro, where session players equipped with AI capabilities could seamlessly complement musical performances.

Additionally, Apple demonstrated the utility of AI in addressing common photography challenges, exemplified by the Pro's adaptive flash technology for improved document scanning.

Despite the absence of groundbreaking AI breakthroughs, Apple's emphasis on enhancing the user experience through AI advancements resonated throughout the event. Anticipation mounts for WWDC, where Apple is expected to unveil further AI innovations, including speculations of an AI-powered Siri or potential partnerships with leading AI providers.
