Google Gears Up For Desktop Mode On Android: Here's What The Leak Reveals

Android's desktop mode promises to deliver an experience that mirrors what users are accustomed to on Windows or ChromeOS.

Google may finally be ready to blur the line between phones and PCs. A recent code leak hints at a new "Android Desktop Mode" that would transform smartphones into full-fledged desktops when connected to an external screen — something Samsung and Motorola users have already been enjoying with DeX and Smart Connect.

A Long Time Coming

While this isn't the first time we've heard whispers of Google's desktop ambitions — the earliest traces date back to 2023 — the latest leak indicates the tech giant is now inching closer to launch. According to the report, the user interface is still undergoing refinements, making it unlikely the feature will debut with Android 16. Instead, insiders expect it to arrive with Android 17, possibly rolling out first on Google’s next-gen Pixel devices.

The mode promises to deliver an experience that mirrors what users are accustomed to on Windows or ChromeOS. Think resizable app windows, a desktop-style taskbar, and robust multitasking capabilities — all designed to create a seamless transition from handheld to big-screen use.

What to Expect from Android's Desktop Experience

Once enabled, the mode would activate when a smartphone is connected to an external display via USB-C. This would allow users to operate multiple apps at once in separate windows, much like they would on a PC or laptop. Additionally, users could benefit from more traditional navigation elements and an enhanced app management system.

The report also raises the possibility of a wireless connection option, though that detail remains speculative for now. Given that both Samsung and Motorola already support wireless casting in their desktop modes, it’s not far-fetched to imagine Google might follow suit in future updates.

Likely a Pixel-First Rollout

While there's no official confirmation yet, the feature is expected to debut exclusively on Pixel phones, at least initially. This would follow Google’s usual pattern of introducing new Android features on its own hardware before opening them up to the wider Android ecosystem.

As for when exactly users will get their hands on Android Desktop Mode, it looks like the wait will extend into 2025. But if this leak is any indication, Google’s take on desktop-mode computing could be well worth the anticipation.
