Google I/O 2025: Android 16, AI Upgrades & More — What To Expect. How To Watch LIVE

AI is set to dominate the keynote, with new Gemini models and applications across Google’s ecosystem on the horizon.

With Google I/O 2025 set to kick off on May 20, excitement is brewing over what the tech giant has in store this year. Known for shaping the next phase of Android and AI innovations, the annual developer conference will begin with a keynote led by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, where major announcements on software updates and AI developments are expected.

The event will be live-streamed on May 20 at 10 am PT (10:30 pm IST) via Google’s I/O website and official YouTube channel. Although hardware announcements like the Pixel 10 series are likely off the table this year, the focus on Android 16 and AI-powered features promises to make this edition a compelling watch.

Android 16 to Take Centre Stage

Android 16 will be the headline act at this year’s keynote. Google had already given us a sneak peek at its recent Android Show, hinting at a refreshed design, tighter Gemini integration, and enhanced security capabilities. But the keynote will likely dive deeper into how Android 16 plans to improve user experience, both visually and functionally.

We can expect more details around the interface redesign, smoother multitasking features, and possibly new customisation options. There’s growing anticipation that Google will tie much of Android 16’s functionality to its growing suite of AI tools, particularly Gemini, positioning the update as a leap forward in smart OS evolution.

Gemini AI Set to Expand Across Platforms

AI is set to dominate the keynote, with new Gemini models and applications across Google’s ecosystem on the horizon. While the company has already previewed some enhancements, the keynote may showcase how Gemini will be further embedded into Search, Gmail, Maps, and beyond.

From smart replies and predictive actions to enhanced contextual understanding, Gemini’s deeper integration could redefine everyday user interactions. According to reports, we might even see new AI features tailored for productivity, creative tools, and even developer workflows.

Sneak Peek at Wear OS and Extended Reality

Though hardware may not be the star of the show, Google could tease developments on the software powering its next-gen devices. Wear OS 6 is rumoured to receive a major revamp, including a redesigned interface and seamless AI integration via Gemini. The update is expected to bring a smarter, more intuitive wearable experience.

There’s also buzz around Android XR — Google’s software platform for extended reality devices. While we may not see a headset debut just yet, the company could provide early glimpses of how it’s laying the groundwork for future AR/VR products.

As anticipation builds, all eyes will be on Sundar Pichai when he takes the stage.
