Meteorite Strikes Farmland In Tamil Nadu's Achamangalam Village, Creates Five-Foot-Deep Crater
District officials have collected samples from the pit and the surrounding area and sent them for analysis.
A gaping hole found in a farmland at Achamangalam village in Tamil Nadu's Thirupattur district has been attributed to a meteorite hit. The five-foot hole was discovered by the farm owner, who also felt heat emanating from it.
As soon as the owner of the farmland discovered the hole, he informed the police and district officials. Later, a team of officials reached the site to examine its origin and nature.
It Might Have Landed Here Coming In From Asteroid Belt: Scientist
The team that visited the farmland included district scientific officer (in charge) Ravikumar, a well-known scientist. When he arrived at the spot, he took samples of soil from near the crater and inside it. The samples have been sent to Vellore and Chennai for additional examination.

"We have collected samples from the pit and the surrounding spot. It is a meteorite that has hit the ground. It might have landed here coming in from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter (planets)," Ravikumar was quoted as saying in a report by India Today.
Additionally, for further analysis, the samples will also be sent to Ahmedabad, he added.

A News 24 report said the incident had caught the imagination of local residents, and many villagers have been streaming in to see the meteorite impact site. For the residents of Achamangalam, this event has introduced an element of cosmic wonder into their everyday lives, merging their pastoral routines with the excitement of a celestial occurrence, the report added.
The event serves as a reminder of the ongoing and dynamic interactions between planet Earth and the vast universe beyond.
