Sandeshkhali Violence: Calcutta HC Orders CBI Probe Into Alleged Crimes Against Women, Land Grabbing

The Calcutta HC also stated that the investigation into the matter will be monitored by the court.

Sandeshkhali Violence: The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday ordered a CBI investigation into allegations of crimes against women and forcible land grabbing in West Bengal's Sandeshkhali, as reported by news agency PTI. The court also stated that the investigation into the matter will be monitored by the court. The next hearing in the matter will take place on May 2.

The High Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe allegations of crimes against women and forcible land grabbing in Sandeshkhali and submit a comprehensive report to it on the next date of hearing.

A division bench presided by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam directed the CBI to file a comprehensive report on the alleged illegal conversion of agricultural land into water bodies for pisciculture after conducting a thorough inspection of revenue records and physical inspection of land alleged to have been converted. The bench also comprised Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya.

Enforcement Directorate officials were attacked on January 5 by a mob when they went to Sandeshkhali to search the premises of now-suspended Trinamool Congress leader Shajahan Sheikh in connection with a ration distribution scam case.

On the Calcutta High Court order in the Sandeshkhali case, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari took a swipe at the TMC government in West Bengal and said that results will be achieved if CBI works independently but nothing will come out if the state police will have some role. We welcome the order. You will get the results if CBI works independently. But if there is some role of the state police you will not get any results," Adhikari said.
