Mentally Unstable Man Threatens Bomb Blast In Mumbai, Police Say Hoax Call

The man reportedly dialled the Mumbai police control room and said there would be explosions in the city and cut the call.

The Mumbai Police was on high alert after an unknown caller threatened serial bomb blasts in the city. The call was received on Saturday at around 6 pm at the Mumbai Police Control Room where the caller claimed there would be explosions in Mumbai and cut the call, reported ANI citing Mumbai police.

Meanwhile, the police have started investigations at several places but till now nothing suspicious has been found. The officials are currently trying to find out the details of the caller.

The police have now said that the call was made by a 32-year-old man who is suffering from a mental ailment, reported PTI citing officials. They said the man allegedly made a hoax call to the Maharashtra police’s control room about a bomb in Mumbai. Acting promptly, the police traced the man to Amravati, but no arrest was made as he was found to be mentally unstable, an official from Amravati police said, quoted PTI.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said Mumbai police is alert and fully capable of handling anything illegal. "Mumbai Police is alert and fully capable. If anyone does anything illegal, strict action will be taken..." he said.

The man lives dialled the 112 emergency helpline number of the state police on Saturday evening and claimed that there was going to be a bomb blast in Mumbai and disconnected the call, the official was quoted as saying by PTI.

He said the investigations revealed that the call was made from a mobile phone and its location was traced immediately, adding that the man is undergoing psychiatric treatment.

Earlier in November this year, a man was arrested by Mumbai Police for calling up the Control Room in a drunken state and giving false tip-off that some terrorists entered Mumbai on the 15th anniversary of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. Police officials told news agency PTI that the caller claimed that two to three terrorists had landed at Mankhurd's Ekta Nagar downmarket area and were only ostensibly 'planning something'. The Mumbai Police swung into action right after the call and tracked the caller by using tech intel.

The Police identified the caller as Laxman Naravane and interrogated him while also investigating the tip-off as a standard precautionary measure.
