BJP leader and leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari was suspended from the West Bengal Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.
New Delhi: BJP leader and leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari was suspended from the West Bengal Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. He was suspended from the entire winter session of the Vidhan Sabha.
He has been accused of allegedly making "objectionable remarks" against Speaker Biman Banerjee.
Ruling party MLA Tapas Rai brought the proposal to suspend Suvendu from the assembly.
"Suvendu Adhikari has been suspended for the entire winter session for using objectionable words and gestures towards the Speaker's Chair," State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay said.
He said in his motion that during the discussion on a resolution on Constitution Day, Adhikari raised slogans inside the House. Subsequently, he and other BJP MLAs walked out of the House despite warnings from the Speaker.
On Monday, a political showdown unfolded between the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state legislature.
According to ABP sources, the focal point was the BJP's proposal. The BJP put forth a proposal to discuss the state government's policies, but the proposal didn't receive approval.
Only permission to read out the proposal was granted, following which, the BJP walked out. BJP legislators outside the assembly chamber staged a protest. Slogans were raised, accusing everyone in the Trinamool of being thieves.
Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress exchanged slogans and verbal attacks against each other.
Responding to the Trinamool's accusations, he stated, "Has the public sent us here to indulge in brawls or to collect salaries? Therefore, we have done exactly what the BJP has been doing."
Adhikari, however, said the Speaker and the ruling party are functioning in an unconstitutional manner.
Education Minister Bratya Basu slammed the BJP government at the Centre for allegedly undermining constitutional norms.
The BJP legislative party is planning to move a 'no confidence motion' against the Speaker during the ongoing session, reported PTI.
