Part of me believes in my own abilities: Djokovic

London [UK], July 16 (ANI): Newly crowned Wimbledon Champion Novak Djokovic, who defeated South Africa's Kevin Anderson 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 in the final of the championship, has said that he did not expect to make a comeback in the tournament but he never doubted his abilities.

"I did not expect to be back in the top shape already here in Wimbledon so quickly. If you asked me after Roland Garros, I would probably maybe doubt that," Djokovic said.

"At the same time, there is a part of me that always believes in my own abilities, believes in my own quality of tennis, what I possess. Whenever I come to the tournament and, Grand Slams especially, I believe I can have a good opportunity to fight for the trophy," he added.

The 31-year-old, who had to cut short his 2017 season due to elbow injury, made a solid comeback in this year's Australian Open but lost in the pre-quarter final clash 6-7, 5-7, 6-7 against Hyeon Chung of South Korea. The Serbian then appeared in BNP Paribas Open and the Miami Open where he lost his initial clashes.

The former world number one, however, asserted that the process made him patient and he had to learn the lessons in hard way.

He further stated that Wimbledon is very special trophy to win and he could not think of any better place to make a comeback.

Reflecting on his future, the Serbian player said that he is not sure about the same but currently he is looking forward for the US Open.

"I really can't see the future. I don't know what's going to happen. But I like to play on hard courts. US Open was always a successful tournament for me. I'm looking forward to also go out there and play my best and see where it takes me," he said.

Djokovic has thirteen Grand Slam titles to his name including six Australian Open titles, Four Wimbledon titles, two US Open titles and one French Open title. (ANI)
