WPL 2023: Why Mumbai Indians Were Allowed To Review Wide Call In Tournament Opener Against Gujarat Giants

The incident happened in the last ball of the 13th over of the Gujarat Giants innings.

The inaugural edition of the Women's Premier League got off to a blockbuster start with the match between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Giants on Saturday. Even though it was the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side that registered a dominating win over the Beth Mooney & Co, the crowd, the atmosphere and the kind of reception overall that the tournament opener got was a sign of things to come.

However, one incident that has caught the eye of fans following the game was when Mumbai opted for a review against a wide-call. While this was something which the fans had not seen before, it is interesting to note that WPL Playing regulations allowed a player to review any decision taken by the on-field umpire regarding a wide or no-ball which is why the franchise was allowed to take a review.

It was the 13th over of the Giants' innings when batter Monica Patel had actually edged the ball but the on-field umpire signalled it wide. Later, the herself told the umpire that she had hit the ball and replays also confirmed the same after which the umpire had to overturn her on-field call.

As per section 3.1.1 of the WPL playing regulation. "A player may also be allowed to review any decision taken by on-field umpires concerning wide or no ball." However, it is pertinent to note that no extra reviews have been added which means that should a third umpire does not reverse the on-field decision, the team will lose a review which they cannot use even to appeal for or against a dismissal.

After tournament opener, the match will now witness a double header on Sunday with the Royal Challengers Bangalore up against the Delhi Capitals in the first match of the day followed by the clash between UP Warriorz and Gujarat Giants.
