IPL 2020, Orange Cap Winners List: So a day ahead of the opening encounter between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, we look back at the Orange Cap winners in the previous editions of the IPL.
The thirteenth edition of the Indian Premier League will get underway from tomorrow with defending champions Mumbai Indians taking on arch rivals and 3-time champions Chennai Super Kings in a pulsating tournament opener at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The IPL has witnessed the greatest exponent of the willow in the shortest format producing scintillating knocks, whirlwind tons and blistering cameos to light up the cash rich T20 league and contribute meaningfully to their team's success in title winning campaigns.
While the coveted IPL trophy is what the teams battle it out every season on the green turf in some intense and grueling games which span across two months,there are individual accolades for which the frontline batsman and bowlers compete hard in-order to win the Orange and Purple Cap respectively .
Over the years, the most prolific run scorers and brutal assaulter in the shortest format of the game from both India and overseas have led the run scoring charts in the IPL editions gone by to win the Orange Cap and the race to win the prestigious award will again resume in the 13th edition of the tournament.
So a day ahead of the opening encounter between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, we look back at the Orange Cap winners in the previous editions of the IPL.
2008 Shaun Marsh (KXIP)
Australian top order batsman Shaun Marsh scored heavily with the willow for Kings Eleven Punjab in the opening session of the Indian Premier League in 2008 to win the Orange Cap. Marsh who wasn't picked up in the auction and named eventually as a replacement, aggregated a whopping 616 runs for KXIP to end up as the top scorer in the inaugural edition of the league.
2009 MATTHEW HAYDEN (CSK)
After Marsh's exploits in the opening season, his fellow Australian team mate Matthew Hayden led the run scoring charts amassing 572 runs in the second edition of the IPL in South Africa by racking up 572 runs for the Chennai Super Kings.
2010 - SACHIN TENDULKAR (MI)
Sachin Tendulkar once again proved why is considered the 'Master Blaster' in all three formats of the game as the cricketing icon spearheaded Mumbai Indians' batting efforts notching up 618 runs in 15 games at an average of 47.33 laced with 5 half tons in the 2010 edition of the IPL. He topped the run scoring charts with a staggering 86 boundaries and helped his team sail into the finals, losing out to eventual champions Chennai Super Kings.
2011 AND 2012 - CHRIS GAYLE (RCB)
Windies belligerent opener Chris Gayle lit up the IPL in the 2011 and 2012 seasons of the league with his explosive strokeplay and lofty power hitting. The dashing Jamaican opener was at his destructive best for Royal Challenger Bangalore (RCB) notching up a staggering 608 runs and 733 runs in back to back seasons. The Jamaican produced an absolute spectacle of power hitting striking 59 sixes in the 2012 season. He became the first batsman in IPL history to win the Orange Cap in back to back seasons.
2013 - MICHAEL HUSSEY (CSK)
Chennai Super Kings have been by far the most consistent teams in the IPL history making the playoffs in every season and winning the league thrice. Much of CSKs stellar success in the league has come on the back on batting lineups spearheaded by openers.
Michael Hussey led the batting efforts for CSK in the 2013 edition amassing a whopping 733 runs in 17 games with six half tons. Hussey's purple patch with the bat played an instrumental role in CSK making the finals before losing out to eventual champions Mumbai Indians.
2014 - ROBIN UTTAPPA (KKR)
Kolkata Knight Riders won their second IPL title in 2014 riding high on the back of a prolific run scoring exploits by their opener Robin Uttappa who was in scintillating form with the bat scoring 660 runs in 16 matches with 5 half tons. Uttappa opened the batting with skipper Gautam Gambhir did bulk of the run scoring in the title winning campaign for their team.
2015 - DAVID WARNER (SRH)
David Warner continued the tradition of Australian openers leading the run scoring charts in the Indian Premier League as the swashbuckling opener registered 562 runs in 14 games for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Warner was lethal with his aggressive strokeplay in the powerplays and tonked the best of bowling attacks to all corners of the park.
2016 - VIRAT KOHLI (RCB)
Virat Kohli once again proved to all critics and around the world as to why is he considered one of the most accomplished batsman in all formats of the game as the RCB skipper broke numerous batting records while racking up a staggering 973 runs in 16 games for his team.
The batting spearhead scored the maximum runs in a single edition of the league courtesy his four tons and seven half centuries. Kohli's dazzling run with the willow helped RCB make it to the finals against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
2017 - DAVID WARNER (SRH)
David Warner once again proved to be a batting behemoth for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League as the pugnacious opener aggregated 641 runs in 14 matches to end as the highest run getter in the season and bag his second Orange Cap. Warner's purple patch with the bat saw him notching up one hundred and four fifties.
2018 - KANE WILLIAMSON (SRH)
Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Kane Williams led his team's batting efforts from the front in IPL 2018 by scoring a staggering 735 runs in the season and spearheaded his team's campaign to the final. In the absence of SRH's highly prolific run-getter David Warner, Williamson stepped up as the team's batting lynchpin and scored consistently all season to win the Orange Cap.
2019 - DAVID WARNER (SRH)
David Warner came out all guns blazing in the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League by winning the Orange cap for a record third time. The Australian who came back in competitive cricket after serving a one year ICC ban was back to his habit of providing his team Sunrisers Hyderabad with fiery starts up the order and lay the platform to put up some herculean totals or chasing down daunting targets. Warner amass 692 runs from 12 matches at a stunning average of 69.20, smashing eighth half-centuries.
