ICC Mulls Contingency Plans Amid Uncertainty Over T20 World Cup Amid Covid-19 Threat

The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on cricket and how it is globally affected was discussed in the meeting.

New Delhi: The International Cricket Council (ICC) members on Friday completed their Board meeting via teleconference and spoke about their contingency plans in case the T20 World Cup finally gets shifted from Australia due to the current corona virus situations all over the world . The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on cricket and how it is globally affected was discussed in the meeting. ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney said: “We continue to undertake a comprehensive business continuity and contingency planning exercise which will allow us to adapt to the rapidly evolving world in which we find ourselves. “The ICC management will continue our contingency planning around ICC events and will also work with Members to explore all options available to us based on a range of scenarios connected to the pandemic.” BCCI president Sourav Ganguly was welcomed as the representative from India on the ICC Board. Cricket Australia's effort was praised as they completed a very successful Women's T20 World Cup a weeks back. ICC's audited financial statements for the year 2019 and the final accounts for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 was approved in the board meeting. After the last board meeting was cancelled due to the corona virus outbreak this teleconference took place today. A proper board meeting is slated to take place in a couple of months where the fate of next T20 World Cup will be finalised. The showpiece ICC T20 World Cup scheduled in Australia from mid-October along with the bilateral Test series as a part of the World Test Championship schedule could be in for rescheduling in case the lockdown imposed by the Australian government continues for another two months.
