In a remarkable turn of events, England staged a stunning comeback to win the first India vs England Test at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on January 28 (Sunday) by 28 runs, marking a significant triumph under captain Ben Stokes. Ollie Pope's exceptional century and left-arm spinner Tom Hartley's memorable bowling performance were pivotal for the visiting team. Despite being 190 runs behind after the first innings, England orchestrated a dramatic turnaround on Day 3 and Day 4.

England, on the back of Ollie Pope's outstanding innings of 196, posted a big score of 420 in the second innings. This set India a target of 231 runs to win. While the pitch was not excessively challenging for batting, it did provide some assistance to spinners, and England's spinners exploited the conditions effectively. Tom Hartley emerged as the star of England's bowling in the second innings, securing a seven-wicket haul to dismiss India for 202 in pursuit of the 231-run target.

The loss is a bitter pill for India, who had dominated the first two days with both bat and ball. Skipper Rohit Sharma attributed the defeat to the lack of application in the second innings, particularly from the top-order batsmen.

As a consequence of the loss, India slipped three places to fifth in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table, with their PCT dropping from 54.16 to 43.33. Australia retained their top spot despite losing to West Indies on the same day as India against England, though their PCT decreased from 61.11 to 55. South Africa, New Zealand, and Bangladesh secured the second, third, and fourth positions respectively with a 50.00 PCT.
