‘Unluckiest’ Rohit Sharma’s ODI Record Gets Broken By Travis Head

Travis Head scored a match-winning century against England at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on September 19 and in doing so, he broke a record held by the Indian captain Rohit Sharma.

Travis Head continued his stellar run of play in cricket across formats as he scored a match-winning 154* runs knock off just 129 balls to help Australia chase the target of 315 runs to beat England in the first ENG vs AUS ODI at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham, England. With this hundred, Head broke multiple records, one of which is of the Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s, someone Head called ‘the unluckiest man in the world’ after the 2023 ODI World Cup final.

Travis Head scored an unbeaten 154, which included 20 boundaries and five sixes. It is also his highest score in ODIs. With this, Head broke multiple ODI records. He broke Rohit Sharma’s record of registering the highest individual score in a successful run chase at Trent Bridge. Back in 2018, Sharma scored an unbeaten 137 off 114 balls to ensure India a win against England in Nottingham.

Not The First Time Travis Head Has Broken Rohit Sharma's ODI Record

Notably, this is not the first time Head broke the Indian captain’s record in the ODIs. During the 2023 ODI World Cup, playing in his debut World Cup match, Head scored a hundred in just 59 balls against New Zealand, breaking Sharma’s record of the fastest ODI World Cup century by an opening batter which he achieved in just 63 balls against Afghanistan in the same World Cup.

Interestingly, Head scored another century in the World Cup 2023, this time in the finals against the Rohit Sharma-led India, to help Australia win their sixth World Cup title.

What gives the narrative a humorous touch is that after breaking Sharma’s fastest WC century record and after the World Cup win, Head called the Indian captain the ‘unluckiest’ for not being able to win the Cup despite being in stellar form. And now Head has broken another record that belonged to Sharma.

“He’s (Rohit Sharma) probably the unluckiest man in the world,” Head had said in the post-match ceremony about the Indian captain.

Coming to the ENG vs AUS match, after putting Australia in to bowl first, England got off to a solid start and were cruising for a 350-plus start but a good comeback posted by the Australian bowlers, including Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head, England could only muster 315 runs in 49.4 overs.

Chasing 316, Australia lost captain Mitchell Marsh early, but opener Travis Head and Steve Smith steadied the ship. When things looked set for Australia, they lost Smith. New batter Cameron Green too looked set for fifty but lost his wicket for 32 runs. However, England could not get rid of Head and he made sure, along with Labuschagne, that Australia lost no more wickets and won the match comfortably.

After the Trent Bridge hundred, Head also became the highest scoring Australian on English soil in an ODI, breaking Shane Watson’s 11-year old record.
