Shubman Gill's got future, team need to be patient: Sunil Gavaskar

His innings came to an end in the 12th over when Kiwi wrecker-in-chief Trent Boult dismissed him off a brilliant delivery.

After turning heads with his performances in the domestic circuit, young batting prodigy Shubman Gill received his debut ODI cap on Thursday for the fourth game against New Zealand in Hamilton. However, the U-19 World Cup winner could only muster nine runs off 21 deliveries during his stint at the crease.

Gill may have had failed to leave a mark on his debut One-Day International but has garnered immense support for the way he faced the Kiwi blow which ripped apart the Indian batting line-up.

Meanwhile, former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar has stated that he Shubman is one for the future and that India should be patient with him.

“Well, for whatever little time he was there, he was a little bit tense, nervous. That's understandable because he is playing for the country for the first time,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

“Even then, when Boult was swinging the ball, he was able to get in line, yes, he was hit by the short ball as well. I think this guy's got a future, you have got to be patient with him,” he further explained.

Gill played a few good shots as he managed to get a boundary but at the same time, seemed nervous on his international debut. His innings came to an end in the 12th over when Kiwi wrecker-in-chief Trent Boult dismissed him off a brilliant delivery.

Boult registered a sensational spell of 21/5 in his ten overs, removing Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Gill, Kedar Jadhav and Hardik Pandya, helping New Zealand to bounce back in the series after losing the first three matches.
