Indian cricket team's most successful captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Sunday took to social media to announce his retirement from international cricket. The two-time World Cup winning captain last played for the Indian cricket team at the 2019 World Cup last year after which he made himself unavailable for selection in the Indian team.

The retirement post on social media by the legendary wicket-keeper batsman did not mention the formats he is retiring from, but Dhoni will be seen leading the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2020, scheduled to take place in United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 19.

From skipper Virat Kohli to Sachin Tendulkar, the social media was full of emotional tributes for Mahi. It all started thirteen years ago when MS Dhoni-led India won the first-ever Twenty-20 World Cup defeating arch-rivals Pakistan in a thrilling final. Dhoni led the Indian cricket team to historic victories in 2007 World T20, the 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Seven years ago on June 23, Mahendra Singh Dhoni defeated England in ICC Champions Trophy ODI final to become the first captain in the world to have won all ICC trophies.

Following the 2019 World Cup loss in the semis against New Zealand, Dhoni decided to take a break as he wanted to serve the Indian army in Kashmir. He was unavailable for selection for the T20I series against South Africa and Bangladesh and later went on to miss the series against West Indies, Sri Lanka and Australia.

The Ranchi-born, despite batting between number five and number seven position in major part of his entire career, scored 10,773 runs in ODI format. The veteran retired from the longest format of the game (Test cricket) in year 2014 and accumulated 4876 runs.
