Kashmir's Cricket Youth Need Opportunities, Better Facilities: Irfan Pathan

Pathan emphasized that turf wickets are the need of the hour in Kashmir to prepare players for national-level competitions.

Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan on Thursday, (April 17), said the youth of Kashmir have an unmatched passion for cricket but they lack consistent opportunities and infrastructure to pursue it.

Speaking at the launch of the Epic Victory Cricket League (EVCL) in Srinagar, Pathan said the new league aims to bridge the gap and bring out raw talent.

"I have seen it myself - a left-arm pacer from Kupwara, boys from Baramulla... they have the fire. What is lacking is exposure and proper training," Irfan Pathan, former player of the Indian cricket team, said during a press conference at Hotel Radisson.

He said the EVCL will provide a much-needed platform for young players not only in Jammu and Kashmir but also from states like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. He said the league will have a mix of emerging talents and experienced domestic players, providing an opportunity for learning and guidance.

"It is not just a tournament; it will be a platform to change lives," he said.

Pathan also stressed on the urgent need for better cricket infrastructure in Kashmir. He said, "Many districts still play on matting wickets."

The former India all-rounder emphasized that turf wickets are the need of the hour in Kashmir to prepare players for national-level competitions.

"Rise of women cricketers from the region is inspiring and shows that the youth is keen to make their mark regardless of gender," he added.

Irfan Pathan, who has previously worked closely with cricketers in Kashmir during his stint with the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA), said he has seen the hunger for cricket in remote areas of the valley.
