Mythological Story

According to legend, Lord Vishnu took the Narasimha avatar to protect his devotee Prahlad. In this form, the Lord was half-man and half-lion. He emerged from a pillar at noon to destroy the tyrant Hiranyakashyap.

To uphold the divine boon, Vishnu killed Hiranyakashyap on a doorstep—neither indoors nor outdoors—by placing him on his lap and tearing him apart with his claws. This form bypassed the conditions of death, as the demon couldn't be killed by man or beast, day or night, or with any weapon. Thus, Narasimha's fierce form fulfilled all conditions and upheld cosmic justice.

Significance

It is believed that worshipping Lord Narasimha on Narasimha Jayanti helps devotees overcome fear and eliminates obstacles from life. His blessings protect devotees from troubles and fulfill their wishes. Observing a fast and offering prayers on this day is also said to bring prosperity to the home and provide relief from planetary doshas.
