Durga Puja 2024: Dhanuchi dance is a dance form traditionally performed during Durga Puja. The dancers, usually in a traditional attire, hold a dhanuchi or earthen pot filled with fragnant incense in their hands and sway gracefully to the sounds of the dhak drum.

Why Devotees Do Dhanuchi Dance

The Dhanuchi dance of West Bengal is usually performed by devotees during the ocassion of Durga Puja. The dance is dedicated to Goddess Durga and it symbolises joy, respect and spiritual devotion. The dancers hold a dhanuchi, which contains coconut shells and aromatic incense which are burned and swayed rhythmically to the beats of the traditional drums. The swirling smoke and movement is believed to purify the environment and invoke the blessings of the Goddess. The dance shows devotion, surrender and respect to the divine power that celebrated the victory of good over evil.

Especially on the grand night of Mahanavami, devotees show their respect through this dance, seeking blessings, protection and divine connection through rhythmic movements and swirling incense smoke.
