Venezuela: Opposition leaders Lopez and Ledezma jailed

"Lopez and Ledezma were planning to flee the country and by doing this both of them had violated terms of their house arrest by making political statements"

New Delhi: The two Venezuela's leading opposition figures Leopoldo Lopez and Antonio Ledezma have been sent to jail as they were planning to jail. The two leaders were first detained a day after a controversial constitutional vote. According to the relatives, both of them were arrested from their homes overnight on Tuesday as the Supreme Court revoked the arrest measures. The pro-government Supreme Court while announcing the jailing of the two said that both Lopez and Ledezma were planning to flee the country. Both of them had violated terms of their house arrest by making political statements and speaking to media. They were dragged out of their houses and bundled into cars which belonged to intelligence unit Sebin. However, the Venezuelan President hailed the election victory and the opposition disputes the voting figures. The opposition said that President Nicolas Maduro wants a new super-legislative body in order to consolidate power. This legislative body will task to reform the country's constitution. The opposition boycotted the constituent assembly election which held on Sunday. After the arrest, wife of Mr. Lopez said, Maduro is responsible if anything happens to him. The government would not make her husband bow down". Meanwhile, the United States has called for the "immediate release" of the two leaders. Earlier, the two leaders were imprisoned in Ramo Verde over their role in instigating anti-government protests.
