Rishi Sunak Launches Bid To Replace Boris Johnson As UK PM

New Delhi: Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak formally launched his campaign to replace Boris Johnson as the next Prime Minister of UK. He posted a video where he talks about his immigrant heritage and says “family is everything to me”. He also adds that he will not be a candidate offering “comforting fairy tales”.

Posting a video on his Twitter handle, Sunak wrote, “I’m standing to be the next leader of the Conservative Party and your Prime Minister. Let’s restore trust, rebuild the economy and reunite the country.”

Son-in-law of NR Narayana Murthy, the founder of the Bengaluru-based IT bellwether Infosys, Sunak resigned as the Finance Minister earlier this week saying that the British public "rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously."

Sunak was born and grew up in the coastal English town of Southampton. Recently during the UK-India Awards in Windsor, Sunak spoke about the sacrifices made by his National Health Service (NHS) general practitioner (GP) father Yashvir and pharmacist mother Usha.

Born to Indian parents who moved to Britain from East Africa, Sunak attended the Winchester College private school and further studied in Oxford. Sunak has served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2020 to 2022, having previously served as Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 2019 to 2020.

“We need to make sure that's not the end of the British Indian story. There's lots more we can achieve. There's lots more we can do. And I'm really excited about the future,” Sunak told reporters last week when asked if he could go on to be the first Indian-origin Prime Minister of UK.
