Kim expresses concern over deadlock with US; Moon says "should take bold steps" towards denuclearisation

South Korea which played a crucial role in facilitating the Trump-Kim summit last year, said that North Korea needs to take bolder, practical measured for denuclearisation, to ensure that the sanctions are lifted.

New Delhi: North Korean President Kim Jog Un in his talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his concern over the deadlock in denuclearisation discussions, Pyongyang’s state media reported on Thursday. It said that Kim raised concern about the stalemate created in the process of improving US-DPRK ties and in denuclearization talks. As per the official KCNA news agency, the basic position of pursuing a peaceful resolution through dialogue remains unchanged. China has remained North’s main diplomatic backer and a crucial trade partner whose forces were instrumental in fighting for it during the 1950-53 Korean War. It is also reported that Xi has accepted Kim’s invitation to visit North Korea which will be his first ever such visit. At the same time South Korea which played a crucial role in facilitating the Trump-Kim summit last year, said that North Korea needs to take bolder, practical measured for denuclearization, to ensure that the sanctions are lifted.  South Korean President Moon Jae –In said that corresponding measures must be devised in order to facilitate North Korea’s continued denuclearisation efforts, amid stalling US and North Korea negotiations. Moon Jae-in acknowledged that the agreement signed at the first Trump-Kim summit was “somewhat vague”. He also expressed concern that Kim’s concept for denuclearisation could be different from that demanded by the US. Though, Kim has time and again assured foreign leaders that his concept of denuclearisation is no different in any way from what the international community demands. Kim Jong Un wrapped up his China summit on Wednesday after visiting his key-ally. The trip is largely being seen as a strategy session ahead of his crucial meeting with US President Trump. The next Kim-Trump meeting is imminent, South Korea has said.
