'Extremely High, Imminent Threat of Violent Protests': Brampton Hindu Temple Cancels Event

The consular camp, planned for November 17, was set to offer Indian-origin Hindus and Sikhs a chance to renew essential life certificates. This comes after protestors clashed at Hindu Sabha temple.

A Hindu temple in Canada's Brampton, near Toronto, has cancelled its life certificate event by the Indian Consulate stating "extremely high and imminent threat level of violent protests". The consular camp, planned for November 17, was set to offer Indian-origin Hindus and Sikhs a chance to renew essential life certificates.

"Please be advised that the Life Certificate Event scheduled at Brampton Triveni Mandir by the Indian Consulate on November 17, 2024, has been cancelled. This is due to official intelligence from Peel Regional Police, stating that there is an Extremely High and Imminent Threat Level of violent protests," Brampton Triveni Community Centre said in a statement.

The community centre also appealed to the police to address the threats being circulated against the Triveni temple.

"We apologise to all community members who were depending on the event. We are deeply saddened that Canadians now feel unsafe coming to Hindu Temples in Canada. We call on Peel Police to address the threats being circulated against Brampton Triveni Mandir and provide security guarantees to the Canadian Hindu Community and the general public," the statement added.

Attack On Hindu Sabha Mandir

On November 3, protestors carrying Khalistani flags clashed with people at the Hindu Sabha temple and disrupted a consular event co-organised by the temple authorities and the Indian Consulate on Sunday. Several unverified videos circulated on social media about the protest. The videos appeared to show demonstrators holding banners in support of Khalistan.

Later, a priest was suspended for spreading "violent rhetoric" during the protests. A Canadian police officer was also suspended after videos on social media showed him participating in the pro-Khalistan protest outside the temple in Brampton.

PM Narendra Modi strongly condemned the violence at the Hindu Sabha Temple near Toronto and said such actions will "never weaken India’s resolve".
