'Can’t Weigh Terror Victims, Its Supporters On Same Scale': PM Modi Asks BRICS Nations To Adopt ‘Unified Stance’
PM Modi at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro said that BRICS nations must adopt a clear and unified stance on overcoming terrorism, stressing there is no room for "double standards".
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the victims of terrorism and their supporters cannot be weighed on the same scale, as he called the BRICS Nations to adopt a "unified stance". He also said that the Pahalgam terror attack that India faced was a blow to all of humanity.
"Terrorism is among the most serious challenges facing humanity. Recently, India faced an inhuman and cowardly terrorist attack in Pahalgam. This was an attack on all of humanity,” PM Modi said during the summit.
PM Modi made the remarks while addressing the session on ‘Peace and Security and Reform of Global Governance’ in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro, where he is participating in the BRICS Summit along with other global leaders.
"There must be absolutely no hesitation in imposing sanctions against terrorists. We cannot weigh victims of terrorism and its supporters on the same scale. Any silent support or approval to terrorism for personal or political interests must be unacceptable," he added.
Calling for a "unified stance" on overcoming terrorism, PM Modi said: "On a subject like terrorism, there is no room for double standards! If any country provides direct or indirect support to terrorism, it must pay the price for it."
In a post on X, the prime minister said, “At the Session on ‘Peace and Security and Reform of Global Governance’ during the BRICS Summit, reiterated India’s commitment to the values of peace and brotherhood. Afterall, world peace and security are the foundations of our shared interests and future.”
Earlier in the day, the prime minister also called for an urgent need for comprehensive reforms in global institutions to address the marginalisation of the Global South.
BRICS leaders strongly condemned the Pahalgam terror attack, rejecting "double standards" in countering terrorism.
"We express strong condemnation of any acts of terrorism as criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, whenever, wherever and by whomsoever committed. We condemn in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April 2025, during which 26 people were killed and many more injured. We reaffirm our commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including the cross-border movement of terrorists, terrorism financing and safe havens," the Rio de Janeiro declaration noted.
"We urge to ensure zero tolerance for terrorism and reject double standards in countering terrorism," it added.
The summit, hosted by Brazil from July 7 to July 9, witnessed participation from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and new members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia.
