Afghanistan Mosque Blast: A top Islamic cleric named Amir Mohammad Kabuli is among the 20 dead due to the explosion.

New Delhi: 21 people were killed and 33 more were injured after an explosion took place at a mosque in the north of Afghanistan's capital city Kabul. The blast reportedly took place in a mosque in the Khair Khana area during evening prayers.

Taliban police spokesman in Afghanistan's capital said that the toll from mosque bombing rose to 21 killed while 33 people were wounded, the Associated Press reported.

The Islamic State continues carrying out attacks on civilians and police in Afghanistan even as the Taliban claim they have full control of the war-torn country.

The Taliban is yet to issue any statement on casualties in the fresh incident. No terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the blast so far.

According to news agency ANI, a top Islamic cleric named Amir Mohammad Kabuli is among the 20 dead due to the explosion.

Two weeks ago, two deadly blasts in Kabul took the lives of 10 people and injured 40 others. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for both attacks.

The blast also come as the Taliban completed one year of its rule in Afghanistan. So far, rights groups have claimed that the ultra-conservative insurgents have broken multiple pledges to respect human rights and women's rights.

Since Kabul fell to the Taliban on August 15 last year, Afghanistan has witnessed the new leadership impose severe restrictions on women's and girls' rights while suppressing the media.

The Taliban is reported to have arbitrarily detained, tortured, and summarily executed critics and perceived opponents. The actions come as the war-torn country faces a dire humanitarian situation with over 90% of its population under the threat of slipping below the poverty line.
