Volvo has introduced two new variants of its baby SUV, the XC40. The Swedish carmaker has also increased the price of its debutant R-Design variant, which was earlier launched at an introductory price of Rs 39.9 lakh (ex-showroom pan-India), by Rs 3 lakh. Only 200 units of the XC40 were available at the introductory price and they sold out within 14 days of the SUV’s launch.

Here is the new pricing of the XC40 (ex-showroom pan-India):

  • D4 Momentum: Rs 39.9 lakh (new)
  • R-Design: Rs 42.9 lakh (existing)
  • D4 Inscription: Rs 43.9 lakh (new)

Bookings of the new variants are already underway and the deliveries are scheduled to begin by the end of this month.

The Momentum is the base variant of the XC40 and is the least equipped of the lot. It gets  features such as dual front airbags, side airbags, cruise control, collision mitigation system (front and back), lane keep assist, reverse parking camera, front and rear parking sensors, hill start assist, hill descent control, rain sensing wipers, tyre pressure monitoring system, 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, voice control, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, powered front seats, auto-dimming IRVM, two-zone climate control, air quality system and panoramic sunroof.

However, it misses out on features such as Harman Kardon audio system, wireless charging, powered tailgate, adaptive cruise control, park assist pilot with park assist, heated seats and keyless entry with remote tag compared to the R-Design variant.

The Inscription, on the other hand, is the top of the line variant of the XC40. Over the R-Design, it gets extra features such as power foldable rear headrests, driftwood decor trim and crystal gear lever. The Inscription variant also sports different front grille and ‘Inscription’ badging on the C-pillar to set itself apart from the R-Design variant.

Under the hood, both the new variants are powered by the same engine 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder twin-turbocharged diesel engine that is found in the R-Design variant. It produces 187PS and 400Nm and sends power to all four wheels of the SUV via an 8-speed automatic transmission and a Haldex all-wheel-drive system.

The range expansion with the introduction of two new variants will help the XC40 to further strengthen its case against its rivals: the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA. Volvo claims to have received an overwhelming response for its baby SUV.
