PM Modi Announces 1000 Cr Package For West Bengal, Says State Fighting Well Under Mamata Banerjee

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi this afternoon announced a Rs 1,000 crore "advance interim assistance" for West Bengal after he  conducted an aerial survey of areas devastated by cyclone Amphan which killed 80 people in the state. PM Modi was accompanied by the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Governor Jagdeep Dhankar and other BJP officals. PM assured assistance to the people of Bengal and lauded CM Mamata Banerjee's leadership in handling the crisis caused by the cyclone. "The country is already going through a crisis and during that time we have to deal with a cyclone. The cyclone has hit West Bengal the hardest, it has impacted the people if west Bengal the most. Under leadership of CM Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal is doing its bit in fighting crisis caused by cyclone Amphan, I assure my brothers and sisters of West Bengal that the entire country stands with you in these difficult times", PM Modi "Rs 1,000 crore advance assurance will be given to West Bengal. All aspects relating to rehabilitation, reconstruction will be addressed. We all want West Bengal to move ahead. The centre will always stand with West Bengal in these testing times. We will work together to ensure that Bengal stands on its feet again,"PM Modi said in Basirhat on North 24 Parganas district, post the aerial survey. All the ministers and officials were seen following the social distancing norms, wearing masks and maintaining 'Do Gaz Ki doori'. The super cyclone swept through several parts of Bengal, including capital Kolkata on Wednesday. Lakhs of people were rendered homeless as low-lying areas were swamped by the cyclone that slammed the Digha coast. Earlier, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee had said that two districts – North and South 24 Parganas were completely devastated. They will have to rebuild those districts from scratch. She urged the Central government to extend all help to the state. Amphan was the fiercest cyclone Bengal has ever witnessed. PM Modi would next visit Odisha, where the Cyclone has affected over 44.80 lakh people in 1,500-gram panchayats, despite the Odisha government evacuating around two lakh people from vulnerable areas ahead of the landfall. Meanwhile, restoration work is underway particularly in Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore, and road connectivity is likely to be restored shortly.
