Nagaland Civilian Killings: Internet, SMS Services Suspended In Mon District. Governor Condemns Incident

The State Government suspended all mobile internet, data and bulk SMS service of all providers across the Mon district with immediate effect.

New Delhi: A day after civilians were killed by the security forces in Oting village of Mon district, the State Government suspended all mobile internet, data and bulk SMS service of all providers across the Mon district with immediate effect, reported ANI. 

Home Department, Government of Nagaland issued a notification stating, “I, Abhijit Sinha, Home Commissioner, Nagaland, hereby promulgate this notification under Section 5 of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 to prohibit the Mobile Internet/ Data Service/Bulk SMS of all the Service Providers in the entire area of the Mon District with immediate effect till further orders."

The notification further read that any breach of the promulgation will be punishable under Section 188 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and relevant sections of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885. 

Governor of Nagaland, Jagdish Mukhi has condemned the killings of civilians by security forces in Oting village of Mon district, reported PTI. The press statement released by the Raj Bhawan, Kohima on Sunday stated, "Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, Hon'ble Governor of Nagaland and Assam condemns in the strongest possible words the incident of firing on the villagers on the evening of 4th December 2021 at a point between Oting and Tiru village under Mon District."

The statement further read that the Governor in a communique stated that the Government has already formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to immediately investigate the incident and deliver justice. The press statement said that investigation will be carried from all angles. 

As per the statement, the Governor said that a court of inquiry has been set up against the personnel of security forces involved in the incident. He appealed to everyone to maintain peace. "Meanwhile, the Governor conveys deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured persons. In the meantime, he has appealed to all to maintain peace,"

On Saturday, the security forces had killed some Naga youths suspecting them to be terrorists in the Oting village of Mon distrcit in Nagaland. Following the incident, the irked villagers set fire to the vehicles belonging to the security forces and some people were shot dead when the forces were trying to control the mob. 

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio ordered a high level probe into the incident. Condemning the incident, he tweeted, “"The unfortunate incident leading to killing of civilians at Oting, Mon is highly condemnable. Condolences to the bereaved families & speedy recovery of those injured. High level SIT will investigate & justice delivered as per the law of the land. Appeal for peace from all sections."

Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed anguish over the incident. "Anguished over an unfortunate incident in Nagaland's Oting, Mon. I express my deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives. A high-level SIT constituted by the State govt will thoroughly probe this incident to ensure justice to the bereaved families," he tweeted.
