Jawa’s New 293cc Engine For India-bound Bike Revealed

Retro-licious!

Jawa’s New 293cc Engine For India-bound Bike Revealed

If you’re a motorcycling enthusiast but don’t relate to the sound of old-school Jawas, then you aren’t old enough. The thump of the two-stroke dual exhaust has made us all weak in the knees at some point in our life. Now, some of you may be aware that Jawa is coming back to India, but what many don’t is that the upcoming bikes will be powered by an all-new 4-stroke engine seen below.

Jawa’s New 293cc Engine For India-bound Bike Revealed

It looks as retro as it possibly could with a chrome finish, rounded edges, a 1929 badge, dual exhaust outlets right from the manifold and the iconic Jawa emblem on the teardrop gearbox and head, taking us all on a trip down memory lane. But sadly, it cannot replicate the thump of the old unit. This 293cc, liquid-cooled, single cylinder, DOHC motor has been built keeping in mind the Jawa DNA. But because this is a 4-cylinder motor, it is almost impossible to replicate the old sound. Hence, Jawa claims this new engine will have a unique soundtrack of its own (fingers crossed).

Now, let's jump onto the numbers. This unit makes a healthy 27PS of power and 28Nm of torque. Developed in Varese, Italy, the designers were specially asked to keep a flat torque curve and keep it free revving, to resemble the the power delivery of the older engine. Classic Legends, the folks who developed the new engine, claim that the motor would be “strong enough to last a lifetime.”

Jawa had earlier unveiled the 350 OHC engine for the Czech and North American markets. This 397cc, four-stroke motor is capable of producing 27PS @ 6500rpm and 30.6Nm @ 5000rpm. However, this unit looks a lot more mechanical and modern when compared to the classic Jawa motor that’s coming to India.

The new Jawa for India is expected to be unveiled during this year’s festive season. The company, now owned by Mahindra, hasn’t released any hints regarding the motorcycle’s styling or prices. However, we expect it to be a neo-retro cruiser priced at a premium of around Rs 3 lakh. The bike will rival the likes of the recently launched FB Mondial HPS 300 in India. At this price point, would you consider buying it? Lets us know in the comments below.
